Community engagement on NW 13th

NW 13th
Rethink Streets has officially kicked off the most important phase of our project- community engagement! We recently held our first Walk and Learn workshop on NW 13th. We invited our client, the Pearl District Neighborhood Association's Planning and Transportation Committee, to walk the street with us, and share their thoughts about aspects of the study area that they liked, and about areas that could be improved. Participants told us stories about personal experiences on NW 13th, and we were even able to enjoy a rare sunny day. We were not only given a wealth of data for use in our plan, but also a greater of sense of why people think NW 13th is a special place. We are committed to creating a plan that reflects the needs of the…

Reaching out to local businesses — it’s business time!

Reaching out to local businesses — it’s business time!

NW 13th
It has been so much fun getting to know the businesses on NW 13th! While an initial visit to the street might make someone think that it’s dominated by major businesses like Keen, Safeway, and 24 Hr Fitness, there are over 70 businesses of all shapes and sizes. Some are retail, some beauty and fitness, some are restaurants, and many others are creative firms. Some have their storefront on the street, others are hidden within the many historic buildings like the Gadsby Building. We have been very well received by local businesses, who have been very excited to share their thoughts. Long term parking for employees? Shutting down the streets to cars? Making events easier to implement? Check! Everyone has ideas and opinions about the street and we've been steadfastly working to…

Capturing activity on NW 13th

Capturing activity on NW 13th

NW 13th
In trying to understand what makes NW 13th so special as a street, we realized that we needed to have observations and data if we wanted to prove this point. We then asked ourselves, what is the best way to capture how people are using a street? Los Angeles’ People Street program wants to turn the city’s streets into active spaces for people. Their activity scan form was the perfect way to capture how people are using the street, not simply how they move through it. Our team set out on an initial set of activity scans along the whole length of NW 13th, capturing all activity on the street. This data looks at the people who they are, where they are, what they’re doing. Some early findings caught our…

Observing the people who use NW 13th

Observing the people who use NW 13th

NW 13th
As we begin the process of better understanding NW 13th, we are excited to share images of our initial steps to gain insight into the particular experiences of users of the street. In doing this we sought to acquire knowledge about the relationship between people and space so we decided to leave the office, get out, and observe. As we witnessed the daily activities and circumstances of people on the street, we recorded textually and visually how individuals enact space. At the end of the day, this was helpful in beginning to understand what people do on NW 13th and what their needs are. Sometimes, you just gotta go and live the street. [photo_gallery_wp id="2"]
